AZ Dental utilizes cephalometric X-rays to capture complete images of the side of your face, including the nasal and sinus passages. The unique ability of this device to capture more unusual areas of the oral and maxillofacial region makes it easier for our dentists to provide effective treatments to restore and improve your oral health and smile. We invite you to call us at 408-437-1111 to learn more about cephalometric X-rays in San Jose, California, and schedule your appointment with Drs. Navdeep Aulakh, Parin Patel, Kevin Hashemi, Heidi Lee, Nipa Shetha, Victoria Furman, Allan Pang, Lynna Bui, The Phan, Anthony Nguyen, Hesham Amer, and Anastasios Photopoulos.
Cephalometric X-rays are extraoral, meaning that the device captures images from outside your mouth. These X-rays are typically taken in at the same time as panoramic X-rays for a combination of images that provide a full view of the side of your face. These images include many areas that intraoral bitewing X-rays miss.
Cephalometric X-rays help our dentists:
- View the side profile of your face
- View the jaw in relation to the cheekbone
- Gain a better understanding of malocclusion (bad bites)
- Measure your teeth
- Identify fractures and other injuries to the teeth and jawbone
- Plan orthodontic treatments
Cephalometric X-rays are taken with a panoramic X-ray machine, which is modified to have a cephalometric file holder mounted on a mechanical arm. Your head is placed between the film holder and a mechanical arm, which rotates around your head to capture images of your face, mouth, and teeth. These images are then projected onto a screen and magnified to allow our dentists to easily identify disease, decay, or injuries. The complete side profile of your head provided by a cephalometric X-ray helps us to plan orthodontic treatment and evaluate the impact of braces on your jaw and smile, while the capacity for specific measurements helps us plan implant placement.
