Oral cancer is a pathological disease found in the oral and maxillofacial region.  It can be found on the lips, mouth, tongue, salivary glands, throat, gums, and face.  Treatment is usually effective if the disease is diagnosed in the earliest stages.

Signs of oral cancer include:

  • Red, white, or pink patches
  • Slow healing sores
  • Lumps
  • Leukoplakia (hardened white or gray lesions anywhere in the mouth)
  • Persistent soreness in the mouth

Oral cancer screenings are completely painless.  Our dentists begin by visually inspecting your mouth for any abnormal tissue.  Following visual inspection, our dentists use special lasers to check below the surface for any signs of oral cancer or other pathological conditions.  If abnormalities are detected, a biopsy is taken for analysis.  When the results come back, our dentists will know if it is cancerous, and the exact type and stage of the cancer, and a treatment can be recommended.

Oral cancer screenings are performed biannually during your dental checkups.  You should receive a comprehensive exam at least once each year.  If you notice any unusually tissue within your mouth, contact an appointment with our dentists as soon as possible to receive an oral cancer screening.

It should also be noted that approximately 75% of all oral cancers are linked to modifiable behaviors, such as smoking, tobacco use, and excessive consumption of alcohol.  Our dentists can provide you with information on making lifestyle changes and smoking cessation.
