Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen your teeth against decay. It can be found in many foods, as well as in toothpaste, oral gels, mouthwash, and most community water supplies. When your child visits AZ Dental, Dr. Allan Pang will assess your child’s fluoride levels and risk of cavities, and if necessary provide a fluoride treatment to strengthen his or her teeth. When your child eats sugars or carbohydrates, the bacteria in your mouth produces acids. These acids attack the tooth enamel, eventually resulting in cavities, decay, and childhood periodontal disease. Fluoride helps to slow the loss of minerals and remineralize the tooth enamel, strengthen your child’s teeth against the harmful oral acids that cause cavities. This preventive treatment helps protect your tooth enamel and reduces the risk that your child will develop oral problems.
While fluoride treatments are an excellent preventive treatment, they are most effective when used as part of a good oral health routine. This includes regular brushing and flossing, visiting the dentist for routine cleanings and exams, and maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Our pediatric dentist will work with you to ensure that your child receives the appropriate amount of fluoride. Too little fluoride, and their teeth will not be adequately protected. Too much, and they run the risk of developing fluorosis or other dental problems later in life.
Fluoride is available in several topical forms, including foams, liquids, varnishes, and gels. We will apply your child’s fluoride treatment in the form with which they feel most comfortable.
