Orthodontic treatment is highly effective for children and teenagers, as their jaws and teeth are still growing and developing, making it easier for our orthodontist to provide effective treatments. Children should receive their initial orthodontic screening at about age 7 to determine if and when orthodontic treatment will be needed. We welcome you to contact AZ Dental at 408-437-1111 to learn more about children’s orthodontics in San Jose, California, and schedule your child’s appointment with Drs. Anthony Nguyen, and Hesham Amer.
Irregularities and problems in the alignment and function of children’s teeth are almost always the result of genetics or developmental issues. Sometimes, though, certain habits and behaviors can cause or worsen these problems. Problematic habits and behaviors include:
- Mouth breathing
- Thumb or finger sucking
- Prolonged use of a pacifier
- Poor oral hygiene
- Poor nutrition
When your child receives his or her orthodontic treatment, we will begin with an exam and evaluation of the teeth. This initial exam will include X-rays, bite impressions, models, and computer-generated images of the head and neck. All these will help plan your child’s treatment. Your child’s orthodontic treatment will most likely involve the use of traditional metal braces
Common orthodontic appliances used in treatments include:
- Fixed braces (usually metal or ceramic)
- Retainers (provided after treatment with braces has been completed)
