Wisdom teeth often cause problems to your smile and oral health when they begin to erupt.  Dr. The Phan offers wisdom teeth extractions in San Jose, California, to prevent these teeth from damaging your oral health.  We welcome you to contact AZ Dental at 408-437-1111 for more information about wisdom teeth extractions and to schedule your appointment with our oral surgeon.

Your wisdom teeth, or third molars, are usually the final 4 of your 32 teeth to erupt.  In most cases, there is not enough space is the mouth for these teeth to erupt properly, and the teeth become impacted or emerge in harmful positions, causing a variety of problems, including:

  • Damage to nearby teeth
  • Disease
  • Infection
  • Tooth crowding
  • Cysts or tumors

If your wisdom teeth are impacted, there are several types of impaction that may occur, each with their own problems:

  • Soft Tissue Impaction – the crown of the tooth emerges from the bone, but the gum tissue covers part or all the crown and is not properly positioned around the tooth. This contributes to infection and tooth decay.
  • Partial Bony Impaction – the tooth has erupts partially, but a portion of the crown remains submerged below the gum and jawbone. Infection is common.
  • Complete Bony Impaction – the tooth is completely encased by the jawbone. Complex removal techniques are required to treat the problem.

When your wisdom teeth begin to come in, our dentists will conduct a thorough examination of the wisdom teeth and the surrounding areas to evaluate the potential damage.  If extraction is required, our oral surgeon will provide you with a local anesthetic, IV sedation, or general anesthesia to help you remain comfortable during your surgery.  The teeth will then be removed from your mouth.

This surgery does not require an overnight stay.  You will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions and any needed prescriptions following your treatment.
