Prior to receiving a restorative treatment, such as an implant or a bridge, you may need to receive a bone grafting treatment. Dr. The Phan can provide you with bone grafting to stabilize your jaw and preserve and augment your bone tissue for a successful restoration. To schedule your consultation with our oral surgeon and learn more about bone grafting in San Jose, California, please contact AZ Dental at 408-437-1111.
The tissues in your jawbone can degenerate due to periodontal disease, tooth extractions, infection, and traumatic injuries. When this occurs, bone grafting is needed to augment your remaining bone tissue and provide support for your remaining teeth or dental implants. Bone grafting increases the height and/or width of the jawbone, filling in the voids and defects of your remaining bone. Preferably, our dentists will use bone tissue from your own body in your procedure (usually taken from the posterior part of the lower jaw or chin), but we may also use tissue taken from a “bone bank,” a cadaver, a cow, or synthetic bone tissue.
Bone grafting is generally a very successful procedure, but can take several months to complete. When you receive this treatment, our oral surgeon will numb the grafting and extraction sites with a local anesthetic. A small incision will be made to prepare the receiving site and anchor the bone in place. Following the graft, synthetic membrane may be used to cover the new bone, promote new growth, and prevent infections in the bone and soft tissue. Over the next few months, the graft will fuse with your existing bone, creating cell growth and firm adhesion, and providing you with a greater bone mass.
You will not require an overnight stay following this procedure. We will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions, and prescribe medications to help you manage discomfort, swelling, and infection.
If you have further questions about bone grafting, please contact our office. We will be happy to provide you with additional information.
