When you visit AZ Dental for your comprehensive dental exam, our dentists will check your mouth for any abnormal tissues.  If so, our experienced oral surgeon, Dr. The Phan, will provide you with oral pathology to identify the type of bacteria and determine the exact oral disease in your mouth so that we can provide you with an effective treatment.  We invite you to contact us at 408-437-1111 to schedule your appointment with our dental professionals and learn more about oral pathology in San Jose, California.

When your mouth is healthy, the mucosa-lined soft tissue of the mouth appears smooth and pink.  Changes to this tissue often signal the beginning of a pathologic process, such as oral cancer, geographic tongue, median palatal cyst, or hairy tongue.  These changes are usually uncomfortable and disfiguring, but are not life threatening in the early stages.

Oral cancer, of course, is life threatening.  Fortunately, there is also a high chance of successful treatment when oral cancer is diagnosed in the earliest stages.  Successful diagnosis of oral cancer requires a biopsy and analysis, so seeking treatment when you first notice the changes in your mouth could mean the difference between life and death.

If our dentists notice abnormal tissues or cell changes in your mouth while performing a routine exam, we will take a tissue sample from that area and send it to a lab for analysis.  After the results come back, we will be able to determine if you do have a pathological problem, and which treatments will be most beneficial to treat your oral disease.

Common treatments for pathological disease include:

  • Antibiotics
  • Diluted hydrogen peroxide
  • Oral surgery
