Occasionally, a root canal treatment will fail to work as expected. If this occurs, our endodontist will perform a root canal retreatment to help you regain the health and function of your tooth. We welcome you to contact AZ Dental at 408-437-1111 to make your appointment with Dr. Anastasios Photopoulos and learn more about root canal retreatment in San Jose, California.
If your tooth fails to heal properly after a root canal or you experience post-surgical complications, our endodontist can perform a roto canal retreatment to remove the previous crown and packing material, clean your root canals, and re-pack and re-crown the tooth. Root canal retreatment is almost identical to the original procedure, and has a success rate of approximately 75%.
Root canal therapy may fail for a number of reasons, including:
- Leaking the filling material due to a cracked crown
- A curved or narrow root canal untreated during the original procedure
- A delay in placing your restoration
- New decay
- New fractures
- Saliva entering the restoration
- Undetected and complex canal structures
Our endodontist can complete your root canal retreatment in 1-3 visit to our practice. We will begin by administering a local anesthetic and isolating the tooth with a rubber dam to protect it during the procedure. Any restorations (crown, post, filling, etc.) will be removed, along with filling material used in the original treatment and any other obstructions to the root canal. The root canal will then be thoroughly cleaned and reshaped. X-rays may be taken to ensure that the canals are clear.
Once your root canals are clean, we will fill the space with gutta-percha filling material, sealing it against future bacterial infection. A temporary crown or filling will be placed while we create your permanent restoration.
